Wild Horses
The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 put the Bureau of Land Management in charge of protecting the wild horse in the American West. In the past 40 years the BLM has rounded up about 260,000 animals in an attempt to control the mustang. But the program is upside down. There are now more wild horses in holding facilities than are in the wild.Horse advocates say they need to slow down the roundups because the land can support more horses than the BLM allows. Ranchers and their allies say more should be rounded up and sent to slaughter to cull the growing herds.
